High Fructose Corn Syrup Proposed Name Change....Oct 2010
We all know it by now. High Fructose Corn Syrup which sounds so innocent since it contains the word "corn". This term has mislead many people into thinking that the sweetner is composed largely of fructose. It is not. Sugar (as we know it) and HFCS are nutritionally the same. Soft drinks and other products sweetened with sugar vs HFCS are every bit as conducive to weight gain. Some research has shown that continued use of products using HFCS can become more addicting since HFCS is a more highly processed product than regular table sugar.
So while you're not getting any more nutrition value out of using regular sugar vs HFCS you are avoiding a more highly processed food and processed foods are highly addictive.
Changing the name to "Corn Sugar" sounds like the sugar is coming right from the corn. It's not. A better name would be "chemically modified corn sweetener......
